Tiger census begins at Nagarahole
The Nagarahole Tiger Reserve is set to carry out an 8-day tiger census exercise starting on Friday, February 6th. Beat officers and other staff will carry out a sign survey of carnivores and megaherbivores, logging all direct and indirect evidence in the mstripes app. The camera trapping exercise was completed in 25 days time on December 10th. The exercise will start in November and will include density and vegetation plot surveys in each line transect of the respective beats within the next 36 days, based on the number of line transects in each beat. Direct sighting of prey species on the transect line will be logged using a range finder and compass, this being used to determine the distance between the prey species and the transect line. Earlier on Thursday, a refresher training about the phase 1 exercise for this census was conducted at the Veeranhosahalli range. All range coordinators of all ranges of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve range forest officers of all ranges respective subdivision assistant conservator of forest and deputy conservator of forest of the D.C.F. along with other staff of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve participated.
