Running on fumes, NCR’s pollution fight is choking
The central government's Decision Support System (DSS) for pollution monitoring has found that Noida and Ghaziabad are the main contributors to high levels of PM 2.5 in Delhi. The lack of uniformity in addressing pollution and resolving deep-rooted problems such as power supply, end-of-life vehicles, and public transport in the NCR cities is worsening the situation. The use of diesel gensets for power backup is widespread in housing societies, industrial units, and commercial establishments in Noida and Ghaziabad, further adding to pollution levels. The need for a source apportionment study to identify local causes of pollution in these cities has been emphasized.
