‘Avarekai’ the flavour of winter in Mysuru
A four-day avarekai (hyacinth bean) mela is taking place in mysuru, and the mayor is visiting it. The event is organized by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) associated with agriculture, and it is hoped that the mela will promote organic and chemical-free farming practices. Joint director of the department of agriculture says that the avarekai cultivated by farmers in Hunsur KR Nagar and Periyapatna are in high demand across the state. One of the cultivators at the mela, Kalappa, says that the ginnu' variety of avarekai he has been growing is sold out quickly. The delicacies being prepared at the event, such as the avarekai' akki roti ittakid bele' paayasa avarekai sambar, are proving very popular with the visitors.
