WB: 'Scrap notice' on way to owners of pre-2000 vehicles
The state transport department has started sending notices to owners of around 6 lakh old vehicles in Kolkata and Howrah, registered between 1970 and 2000 and with poor emission standards, before scrapping them. Around three-fourths of these vehicles are private ones. The aim is to remove these "unfit" vehicles from the road to cut down on congestion and pollution. Following the notice, a hearing will be conducted to find out the current status of the vehicles and then, the owners will be directed to the scrapyard. Vintage and classic vehicles are exempted.
