A group of 52 undergraduate students at Mangalore University engaged in exam malpractice in April 2022. As a result, their futures are in jeopardy. The students cannot apply for the upcoming semester reexamination until and unless they clear the charges against them. A senior official familiar with the procedures explained that the exam malpractice committee conducts an inquiry after inviting all candidates involved in the malpractice, usually done soon after the conclusion of the semester exam. However, the inquiry into exam malpractice candidates for the April 2022 odd semester was held only in the first week of January this year eight months after the exam. After a probe, the mu malpractice committee decides what action should be taken against each candidate. The same is communicated to candidates via letters. The punishment ranges from a fine to a warning, the most severe penalty being not being allowed to appear for the exam for three years. The exam paper for which a candidate is involved in malpractice is evaluated and the results of all subjects are declared once a decision is made. The next odd semester is due in another two weeks. A principal of a firstgrade college pointed out that if a decision is not made soon all candidates involved in exam malpractice will have to wait until the next odd semester to clear their backlogs. Meanwhile, the
