Maha: Hospital deaths rising, Rs 700cr for medical supplies lies unused
Around Rs 700 crore allocated for medical supplies in Maharashtra's public health department remains unused with Haffkine Biopharmaceutical Corporation Ltd. The state's medical education wing also has several hundred crores lying idle with Haffkine. Over the past four years, Haffkine has struggled to purchase drugs and equipment worth Rs 2,500 crore. The lack of efficient resource management within Maharashtra's health department has been highlighted by the recent increase in deaths at government-run hospitals. Haffkine's inability to establish an efficient system has resulted in funds being tangled up, making it difficult for officials to recover the money.
