Ludhiana officials caught 40 people throwing waste in a canal in less than three hours on Thursday. Twelve of these people were issued challans for throwing waste, and the cleanliness drive has been completed at four bridges and one more bridge will be taken up until January 31. The irrigation department will release water in the canal when MC employees and ngo volunteers catch people throwing waste in the water body on Friday. Those who were issued challans approached officials through elected representatives and other public figures. One of the offenders who was issued a Rs 5000 challan also approached the senior officer saying that she only disposed of a Tulsi plant which had dried up at home. She requested for cancellation of the challan amount, but the official asked her that there is no water in the canal at the moment, even though she threw the Tulsi plant there. He showed helplessness in cancelling the challan. Meanwhile, an officials claimed that one former MC employee was also issued a Rs 5000 challan recently when he threw a Re 1 coin in the canal. He said people are habitual of throwing stuff in the water body. MC Zone Commissioner Jasdev Sekhon said, "Despite several warning and awareness people are not mending their ways and are throwing waste in the canal as of
